trying to figure out after the death of the baby panda. >> kristen fisher has more. >> reporter: one week ago exactly today i was reporting on the very happy news that this panda cub had been born. now a week later, of course, we have learned it has died. people here, especially the panda team, are just devastated, heartbroken. they had been waiting years for this. they thought this miracle cub had been born and then the devastating news just yesterday. apparently the mother let out a distress call around 10:00 a.m. the zoo's panda team knew they needed to check out the cub, but the problem is you know, when you have a giant panda, a mother panda in distress, they were worried that if they went in there and tried to rescue the cub, they might put themselves in danger. it took about an hour for them to really get their plan in place, distract the mother so that another member of the team could get in and actually take the baby panda from that habitat. and the baby just about the size of a stick of butter as the team described it. but apparently in beautiful condition, a beautiful coat, the

you. kristen fisher reporting live from the national zoo. >>> in other news this morning a two-car collision leaves a woman dead just before 8:00 last night on great seneca highway. the victim's name has not been released and no word yet on when anyone else was injured. >>> a powerful crash in southeast washington leaves one man with serious injuries. this accident happened after 11:00 last night at the intersection of southern avenue and bennie road. the vehicles caught fire after impact, and it appears both were totaled. no word yet on what caused this accident. >>> counselors will on hand at watkins high school this morning to help students deal with the injury of a classmate. 15-year-old den in a richards was in fair condition. a police car struck the teenager friday night as she was leaving a football game. the officers were responding to several fights that had broken out in the parking lot. the officer driving the cruiser, corporal raymond bennett, has been placed on administrative leave. >>> if you are just waking up it is time for the first your money report. jessica doyle

died. kristen fisher is life at the zoo with what happened. >> reporter: so sad. what a difference a week can make. you know last night this is what we know now. last night the zoo's pathology team performed their version of an autopsy on this panda cub. we are expecting to get the preliminary results from that at around 10:00 this morning. but by all accounts, from what we can tell at this point in time, it is a very healthy panda cub. there were no signs of visible trauma, of disease or illness. nothing to indicate anything was wrong until around 9:00 a.m. yesterday. that is when members of the panda team heard distress calls. the zookeepers needed to go in and get the cub. that is a dangerous situation with the 240-poundage tatted momma bear just a few feet away. one zoo keeper distracted her with hop any wort. another grabbed the cub and performed cpr for ten minutes but still no heartbeat. >> reporter: i'm worried about my keepers. the scientists and veterinarians. we have to keep them focused on the health of the mom. >> it was such a great opportunity and we all felt so good.

touchdowns and no picks. kristen fisher has a reaction from rg iii. good morning. >> reporter: good morning michael. i like what you said earlier. redskins fans are going to remember yesterday as the day the redskins started winning. it is so true redskins fans have been waiting for rg iii's big debut for so long now and he did not disappoint. in fact he almost exceeded expectations, which is tough to do, given the expectations he had to deal with going into this game. i'll tell you what, yesterday all the sports bars around here in dupont circle absolutely packed with redskins fans, they could not wait to see how he played in his debut game. and they were not disspointd. take a listen. >> fantastic. rg iii is amazing. >> he can run, he can throw, what else can you ask for? >> i think it is going to make a big difference in r game. hopefully now we'll have more wins. >> reporter: there was a very strong contingent of redskins fans inside the superdome. at one point you could hear them chanting rg iii. he said it was the loudest stadium he has ever played in. >> it was a lot of fun o

giant panda, mei xiang gave birth to a cub. kristen fisher of our washington affiliate wsa is at the zoo. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. big developments over the last hour or so. the panda team here at the national zoo says they have finally seen this baby panda. over the last night since the panda was born around 10:45 they haven't really had a chance to see this cub because it's really only the size of about the palm of your hand, very small. the mamma panda, mei xiang has been holding it close to her body, keeping it tucked in her arms. these scientist, all the members of the panda team aren't allowed inside the habitat for at least a few more weeks. it's going to be several weeks before they can actually go in, hold the panda cub and perform an actual physical exam. it's going to be many more months before the public is actually allowed to come inside the national zoo and see this panda cub. a very big moment for everybody here on the panda team. this has truly been six years in the make. very big deal. people here very excited this morning. they really had no idea thi
